Description
Vintage Pocket Level, Davis Level & Tool Co., Springfield, Mass, Model 37 1/2. Condition is "Used". Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.My great-grandfather was Chief Mechanic for Loeser's Department Store on Fulton Street, Brooklyn, in the early 1900's. While digging through his handmade wooden tool chest, I found this beautiful pocket level, stamped "MFG'D BY DAVIS L. & T. Co., SPRINGFIELD, MASS" and decided to do some research.
According to The Davistown Museum website:
The Leonard L. Davis Co., started in 1867, "...became the Davis Level & Tool Co. in 1875.
The ornate levels and measuring tools of L. L. Davis and the Davis Level & Tool Company of Springfield, MA (1875 - 1892), are among the most sought after examples of the florescence of American toolmakers in the second half of the 19th century.
That site has much more information on The Davis Level & Tool Co., including a link to the company's Price List (circa 1880). In that catalog, on pages 29-32 (see pic attached), I found descriptions, drawings and original pricing for their pocket levels. Based on those, I determined that page 30 (Model No. 37 1/2) matches this level perfectly, based on measurement, description and drawing, which is the only pocket level to show the additional top attachment (with tightening screw) for Square or Straight Edge.
This is in very good/clean condition, and with clear bubble and smooth adjustment screw. It would make for an excellent addition to a vintage tool collector's collection.
