Lotta Crabtree Theatre Card Rare East Coast Tour Circa 1870s, advertising trade card with
schedule of stops in New Haven, Conn.--Holyoke, Springfield and Worcester, Mass.---and
Providence
RI.  She was one of the first "one name" stars, a famous singer, dancer and actress.
Born Charlotte Mignon Crabtree Nov. 7, 1847 in New York City, her family followed her father
to the San Francisco Gold Rush in 1851, where she became a child protege of Lola Montez,
appearing in melodeons doing jigs, flings, polkas, shuffles, singing, playing male child roles, etc.,
she was known for putting coins thrown onstage into her stockings. After establishing herself as
a star on the West Coast, she moved back East with her mother/agent and the "Nation's Darling"
began touring until retiring at age 43, as the wealthiest entertainer of her time. She spent the last
35 years of her life as a philanthropist, and several fountains she financed remain in San Francisco
and Boston, where she spent the later years of her life. She died in Boston, aged 76 on 9/24/24.
She is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. Her million estate still finances charitable causes to this day.
