    Description

This is the 7 centimes de Gourde issue of the so called "Stolen Issue" of 1914.  It has a FAVOR CANCEL applied by the Haitian Post Office.
Most of, or the entire shipment of stamps was stolen before delivery to the Haitian post office.  At a later date some, or many of the issue were recovered by postal officials.  The post office chose not to put these on sale.
The Scott Specialized Catalogue of Stamps & Covers has a paragraph about this issue in the Haiti section.  They say some were "cancelled through carelessness of favor."  Then the catalog shows a price for unused or mint stamps, not any used stamps.
Some of this issue, possibly through carelessness, were actually used on cover and passed through the mail.  There are about 8 covers extant used with these stamps that actually passed through the mails showing legitimate use.  Today these covers bring hundreds or thousands of dollars apiece at auction.
Some singles also exist with cancels.  I have seen 13 cancelled off cover examples of this issue.  These 13 show 2 dates of cancel only.  Some of the stamps have original gum, some have no gum.  I have seen many other Haiti stamps of other issues with the same dates of cancel.  Again some with original gum, some with no gum.  I suggest this particular stamp was not cancelled through carelessness.  I suggest it cancelled purposely either to legitimize its use, or for collecting, or for both.
This example has hinged original gum.  The cancel, as all the other favor cancels I have seen, is a 27-27.5 diameter
    Port au Prince
circular date stamp.  This example is lightly toned on the face and on the gum.  That means it was stored in a humid or semi humid environment for many years.
The hinged side shows better at an oblique angle.  The hinge is at left.
The date of cancel on this stamp is 31 DEC 18 meaning 1918.  That is about 4 years after the stamp was supposed to be issued.  This issue also exists with favor cancels dated 30 JAN 22.
This stamp is common mint.  This stamp is extremely scarce to rare with a favor cancel.
