She was said by many of her contemporaries to be 'the Juliet of her day'. Born Elizabeth Ann Brown at 35 St. Peters Square, Leeds to an unmarried former actress, Elizabeth Anne grew up in relative poverty, initially in Skipton and later Guiseley, West Yorkshire. As a young girl she worked in a cloth mill as a fuller and also as a nursemaid. Around the age of 15 she ran away from home to London where she worked initially as a seamstress and then later as a barmaid at the Haymarket. Her first introduction to the stage began after joining a ballet troupe as Lilian Lessont. She later trained under the Actor John Ryder, graduating to Shakesperean roles on the London stage as Adelaide Neilson. During her career she visited America on several occasions between 1872 and 1880 becoming one of the most celebrated Shakespearean actresses of her day. She died tragically at the height of her career and without warning aged 32 whilst enjoying a carriage ride with friends in the Bois de Boulogne, Paris. A post mortem the following day revealed her death was due to an internal haemorrhage.
